Should Castings Be Annealed Or Tempered?

Dec 17, 2024

Whether castings should be annealed or tempered depends on multiple factors such as the material, structure and purpose of the castings.

Basic concepts of annealing and tempering and their application scenarios
Annealing: Annealing is a process of changing the internal structure of the castings, eliminating internal stress and structural defects through processes such as heating, insulation and cooling, thereby improving material properties and mechanical properties. Annealing is mostly used to treat cast iron parts because it is prone to defects such as white spots and fatigue cracks.
Tempering: Tempering is the process of heating and cooling the castings that have been quenched again. The purpose is to remove the hard crystal structure, improve the toughness and plasticity of the castings, reduce their brittleness, and improve wear resistance and corrosion resistance. Tempering is mostly used to treat forged steel parts because such steel parts will have problems such as cracks and deformation after quenching.
